Nice video.  Maybe someday somebody will develop good drone sound.

Will the covered hoppers go along to Omaha?  And what's the flat car load?

Some already have. I've seen some REALLY good drown videos with "synchronized" sound taken at ground level. Sure were impressive!

Good questions.

Thanks for the great video. Looking forward to sharing it with my grandson. I want a drone, but I would probably crash it on its maiden flight. Thanks again.

Most of the exhaust appears to come out of the front stack.  What would cause that?

"Front stack" question...

I'm guessing, here.....

One presumption is that the typical sheet metal baffles
and cinder-trapping netting ( common in coal burners)
was removed during the conversion to oil as the fuel.

On such conversions  metal dividers and baffles as well as steel
mesh, spark-netting gets removed.

So, it may be that the wind-pattern in the now, virtually empty,
smoke box carries the smoke and gasses straight forward, to where
they are pulled-out by the front stack.

From Kratville's book on Big Boys, each engine has its
own quad-nozzle exhaust arrangement.  The rear engine has the
4 nozzle casting and rear stack, closest to the front flue sheet.

The forward engine's 4-nozzles and stack are ahead of the rear set.
The  high velocity of the gases and smoke gets them more
easily caught by the forward quad-nozzle/stack.

Its a good bet that the actual drafting of the gasses is evenly divided
between the stacks, but there are less visible 'solids' in the gas stream
of the rear stack.  There's equal velocity and steam volume up
both stacks --- so that's a good thing.

Check the exhaust pattern of the 3985, to see if it's similar...
They both use the paired 4-nozzle arrangement, as well as
844.

I'm not sure if the sister engines all have been similarly modified,
when converted, or if they're each unique on internal baffling,
or maybe non-existent bafffles.

W.

How would they "turn it at Borie"?

The 3985 did the same thing the 20 years I watched it. I never saw it run Coal fired so don't know how it looked then.

The “somethng [sic] else” is a drop table for the Council Bluffs car shop which was refurbished by craftsmen at the Cheyenne steam shop.

Nice Video. Also how nice the silver trucks look on the 4015. Sure wish that with the front nose wings were the go-to paint scheme!

Very nice to see her live and well. Important to remember that every time she hits the road she draws tremendous crowds and amongst those admirers will be some brand new steam lovers who will carry the torch further into the 21st. century.

I received a letter from a man who just retired from a 40 year career at Conrail/CSX who said that he was bitten by the railroading bug one night in 1976 as he witnessed the AFT pass by he and his dad in the Pine Barrens of South Jersey as the AFT made its way out of Atlantic City behind ex.-Rdg. T-1 2101 ( AFT 1 ) at O'dark 30.

Thanks again to the UPRR for all they do to celebrate America's proud railroad heritage.

The flat car load is a drop table for the car shop, rebuilt at the steam shop.
