A Baldwin Vauclain compound, to be specific.

The smaller diameter high pressure cylinder is seen above its corresponding larger diameter low pressure cylinder.

Stephenson valve gear and spool valves, not visible between the frames, controlled steam flow and admission.

Other way round, assuming the engine is right side up.

If you search the wwweb, there's a good drawing
of the porting used in Vaulclain compounds.

At the turn of the century, superheating advantages gave better
water-conservation, better power, longer distances, and less coal
 consumption.

However, later designs & improved superheating + compound cylinders
were combined to great advantage with articulated freight haulers .....like C&O 1309.
( 2-6-6-2 & 2-8-8-2, particularly N&W's later Y-class variants)

Triple-cylinder compounds were common in marine construction.

And, compounding exists today in both steam turbines & jet engines.
Successor power-stages of turbo-fins are mounted on progressively larger
in diameter disks, at each stage of expansion  --- to keep the mechanical
leverage similar ( torque delivered by each disk to the shaft)  --
- at each stage of expansion.
