Cheyenne's Other Park Locomotive
Author: up6936

Most people have seen the 4004 in Cheyenne, but there is one other Steam Locomotive in Lions Park. 1242 a ten wheeler, built by Cooke. On Saturday May 31, a fence that was placed around the locomotive was dedicated. Just inside the wrought iron fence, is a fence that was built by Floyd Young, and was in Laramie Wy at his and his wife\'s house. The fence has old tools and railroad parts in it. Floyd was one of the last engineers on the 1242. The Sherman Hill Model RR club helped pain the locomotive. Jim Ehrenberger stenciled the tender and cab of the locomotive. Thought everybody would enjoy a shot of this great old locomotive.

This is also close to the locomotive. The Cheyenne tractor club placed this. I should say this all is on the Cheyenne Botanic Garden grounds, in the Rotary Century Plaza, and Western Walkway.

Is this the same location that the engine has always been in, or was it moved to this location?

Hmmmm..1242? I have photos of UP ten-wheeler 1243 which the 844 and 3985 pulled to Railfair 91 on a flatcar. Does UP have the 1243 at Cheyenne? Elsewhere?

According to UP\'s website, they still own the
1243, but it has been on display in the Durham
Western Heritage Museum in Omaha, NE since 1996:

1243 spent a few years in Cheyenne in the roundhouse, then was placed on the flatcar around 1990, for the Wyoming and Idaho Centennials. There was talk at the time of putting it back into operating condition, but the boiler was found to be cracked so they put it onto the flat car and it was seen on Centennial train then. Its currently at the Western Heritage Museum in Omaha.

The 1242 was put into Lions Park here in Cheyenne, in the late 50\'s early 60\'s, have to look in a book I have to get an exact date. Its spent alot of its time next to Sloans Lake in the park, it had a diamond stack put on it at one point to make it look like a kids train ride at a small amusement park, that was right next too it. It was moved in 1990 and placed on the Botanic Gardens grounds within Lions Park, and cosmetically restored. This is where it is currently located. The Sherman Hill Model RR Club recently repainted the locomotive, and hopes to continue working on it in the future.
