Monday Museum Steam: B&O 13, "Lafayette"
Author: bandob

This operating replica at Baltimore's B&O Railroad Museum was built at Mt. Clare by the railroad in 1927. William Norris of Philadelphia built the original in Philadelphia in 1837. Reportedly the originals were to work on the Washington Branch. Here's view of it in operation in 1996.

1) The pops are lifting

2) Rolling along with a clear stack.

3) Pushing back to the museum.

Very nice photos and memory, B&O Bill, of how it was at the B&O R.R. Museum many years back.  Here is a photo that was taken at the museum showing the flat car behind the famous "Lafayette" and the photo shows the musical group called the "Roundhouse Ramblers" who used to entertain at the museum and on many, many excursion train trips on the main lines of both the B&O and the Western Maryland Railway back in the 1960's, 70's, 80's and 90's until the main line trips were discontinued due to high costs and extremely high insurance costs.  Those were the days, my friends.  Also, another photo of the famous "Lafayette" running at the museum.

Isn't the Lafayette a bit of a movie star, as well.  I believe it appeared, along with the William Mason in Disney's
Great Locomotive Chase".

A number these engines began running on the Hudson & Berkshire Rail Road in 1836 from Hudson, NY to W. Stockbridge, MA.. The line is still active with grain trains on the Claverack Branch.  The engine would be a sure hit if it was trucked up to Upper Hudson and CSX let it run on a few miles of its original line,  Part of the line is still in Chatham,  or Grouts Four corners ealy name. It was built to haul marble to the Hudson River and some stone built part of Phildelphia and NYC.  Chatham once a year has Railroad Day and this would be a wonderful time to steam it where early flat iron rails first existed to1847 when replaced by 76# H rail.  The name plate would read "Berkshire" with H & B R R instead on tender.
