Author: Off-pending Some rumblings on Facebook and other places that the Valley Railroad has sold their recently purchased Frisco 1352. This would be the 3rd sale of the locomotive since being “rescued” in the late 90’s.
It is currently is stuck in Taylorville IL and sorely needs rescued again. Date: 10/26/24 17:54 Re: Frisco 1352 sold. Again. Author: CPR_4000 Wasn't this owned by the folks who are restoring the Reading T-1?

It sat for years until the Valley Railroad group bought it last Nov. Posted from iPhone Date: 10/27/24 08:36 Re: Frisco 1352 sold. Again. Author: Frisco1522 So who bought her this time? Poor thing needs to be rescued.

My understanding is that it's making a stop elsewhere in the Midwest for its rebuild, then heading Southeast. The ultimate location will be a huge surprise, outside of the new owner's already obvious willingness to spend money. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/28/24 10:44 by Worthington_S_A. It's interesting we've barely heard a peep about ACL 1504. Date: 10/29/24 05:17 Re: Frisco 1352 sold. Again. Author: Worthington_S_A SCREAMINGCRYING Wrote:

If the Sugar Company returns to the concept of two engines, it'll be the one. Date: 10/29/24 07:46 Re: Frisco 1352 sold. Again. Author: SCREAMINGCRYING Worthington_S_A Wrote:

Probably nearly 70 years in salt air by the water made restoring 1504 much more costly than they envisioned if I had to guess. Date: 10/29/24 07:58 Re: Frisco 1352 sold. Again. Nothing insurmountable, but the driving boxes, and shoes and wedges, were a coagulated mess that had to be persuaded out of the pedestals. Date: 10/29/24 08:50 Re: Frisco 1352 sold. Again. Author: wcamp1472 If the above items were a mess, the axles are a mess, too.
Got to be very careful on matching the re-surfaced axles to the 'brass'.... Too often the normal heat-swelling, when 'warming-up ruins the lubrication ( too tight, after 'new' bearing gets up to "running temps") Cold-clearances want to be very liberal, so that, during break-in, lubrication gets coerced to squeeze between the rotating and stationary bearing components.. Durng warm-up pricess, the brass intitially contracts ( tighter) onto the axle---- leads to axle heating and, a commensurate ( diametric) swelling- --further restricting beneficial lubrication. The lubricant must separate the rotating and stationary bearing components.. any metal-to-metal contact MUST be avoided. Machining for smooth running bearings ALWAYS results in a break-in period, where the two newly machined surfaces, "polish-together" and form a smooth lubricant film to separate the running surfaces, during operation. It can take up to 1,000 miles of revolutions, to break-in newly machined plain bearings ---- which is why many brass bearings get babbited before being matched to the new axle surfaces... Be cautious ... or they'll make your life miserable. All of the other axles should NOW be up-graded to rolling-element bearings, before the loco returns to service... W .
