Donated by the Burlington to the city twelve years before, 3006 (built 1930) sits near the old CB&Q station. Even though the old station is gone, 3006 remains. Gary Date: 12/17/24 06:58 Re: On display CB&Q 4-6-4 3006 at Galesburg Author: dcoursey What a beautiful engine. I've heard it said on this forum a number of times that those CB&Q 4-6-4's were some real barkers.

In addition to the 3006 at Galesburg, the 3002/4000 is at LaCrosse WI, the 3003 is at Burlington IA, the 3007 is at IRM in Union IL, and here's the 3001 at Ottumwa IA on 12/22/2021. With that many saved, It would seem there would be enough parts to put at least one good one together that could run again, someday. Being a Milwaukee fan, I also wish a F-6, F-6a and F-7 4-6-4 would have been saved. At the very least, there should be one NYC Hudson in the Smithsonian. One plain original and one streamlined could have been saved. Too bad the cheap skates on those two railroads wanted the steam, gone. Didn't they only sell for 5 or 6K as scrap iron ? What a loss.

As I was told, the stainless steel was removed sometime after Pearl Harbor for the war effort. Also, maybe not known, the shop forces hated the "inverted bathtub" worn by the 4000 and 4001. Doing most mechanical maintenance on running gear was miserable. Too bad one of the Hudsons has not been restored, but just where would it run? Modernized and streamlined, then de-streamlined and now on display in La Crosse Wisc. if I'm remembering this correctly...and if I'm not, wait for it. Cheers, Dave Edited 1 time(s). All 4000’s were roller throughout. All the rest were coal. And all were converted to roller bearing axles in roughly the mid ‘30s.
4002 would have made a great fan trip engine. There are reports (third hand) that the top speed was never known. There is a train sheet from East Dubuque of a Hudson departing with 105 cars. Mostly grain mty’s I’m sure. Ron Posted from iPhone Date: 12/17/24 19:50 Re: On display CB&Q 4-6-4 3006 at Galesburg Author: coach The CB&Q Hudsons looked best with all-black wheels--no white trim!

Look at how many steamers from the little (but profitable) NKP got saved compared to the giant (but financially troubled) PRR got saved. Exactly, and the Recession of 1958 did not help the preservation cause. Date: 12/18/24 07:49 Re: On display CB&Q 4-6-4 3006 at Galesburg Author: Worthington_S_A Frisco1522 Wrote:

Several years ago when it was up in the air whether or not the 261 lease would be renewed (the "Friends..." ultimately bought it, IIRC), there were rumors swirling that Sandberg was looking at one of the CB&Q Hudsons or 4-8-4's to take its place. As nice of an engine as 261 is, a running Q engine of either wheel arrangement would be pretty boss. Date: 12/18/24 12:01 Re: On display CB&Q 4-6-4 3006 at Galesburg Author: wabash2800 NYC president Perlman is blamed for that. But according to one of his employees that accompanied him to the deadline at Collinwood, he was considering saving one that had originally been streamlined. But when he discoveed railfans had stripped it, he changed his mind. He was livid. If you do a search under my handle, you can find my thread about it. A friend of mine knew the employee who accompanied Perlman. To the best of my knowledge, the headlight/numberboard for that Hudson has not been found, though it was owned by someone in Florida some years ago.
