Steam & Excursion > HICO History Book Chapter 1 "Ashes to Action" 1 of 14 chaptersDate: 01/03/25 20:17 HICO History Book Chapter 1 "Ashes to Action" 1 of 14 chapters Author: scoopdejour We were told more than once that you can't run high speed steam locomotives in the 1960's. They were scrapped more than 10 years ago. Well, whenever you plan to do something above the ordinary, you'll gain an inventory of naysayers looking at the ashes of the past. We chose to take action and move ahead to more then 70+ mainline excursions. One of our initial facilities was the CNJ Communipaw yards in Jersey City, NJ. There wasn't much left when we arrived in late 1960's but enough to service our engines. The tool shed, long since abandoned, still retained the CNJ logo circa 1920's. I also photographed the huge Fairbanks-Morse coal and sand dock. Largest on any US railroad when built circa early 1900's. My Dad captured "The Blue Comet" leaving Communipaw in September 1938. More photos and text in my book which is selling well on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Thanks - Hank Webber.

If you are interested in steam excursions in the 1960's and 1970's or the High Iron company history, I would definitely recommend this book!
