May 5, 2010. UP Steam changed forever when Lynn Nystrom passed away suddenly.

That's a great shot of my late friend Lynn running UP 844 . Thanks so much for posting this photo.

It was a shock losing him suddenly. He was one of the good guys, funny and always had a remark to cover the situation. His wife (widow) Mary is a gracious lady and I hope she is doing well.
A couple of times I rode with them on the 3985 and if he was firing he would say "Sit down and take her, you do pretty good". 3985 could be miserable if you fell behind even a little bit because of how she was drafted. I was always lucky enough to stay with it.
Had fun with Lynn and the guys back in the 90s.
I'm glad they named a car after him.

Thank you for sharing this. He was part of an amazing steam team. Hopefully an Elvis image will show up on this thread. Good person.

I remember meeting Lynn while he was manning the souvenir car when 844 came to Little Rock in April of 2010. It was a shock coming on TrainOrders just a few weeks later and finding out he had passed.

Funny you should say that. Pentrex Videos recently has started posting some of their full programs on the Tube, and the beginning of "Union Pacific's Clinchfield Challenge" has some footage of Elvis firing the 3985 in Memphis.

Lynn was my head brakeman for four years. When we lost both brakeman Lynn went to the steam crew. He was the best head brakeman I ever had. Very dependable.

I never had the honor of meeting Mr Nystrom in person. But through my late friend Bob Krieger I feel like I have a bit of a track into who he was. I always smile when I shoot his namesake tender…

I met him in Tacoma with the 844/4449 excursion. I was explaining a couple things that a friend of mine had asked about, a small crowd gathered and was listening in when Lynn walked over. I indicated who he was and mentioned he was far better versed, but he said "No, please carry on Tour Guide" in a sarcastic but very friendly kind of way. Afterward we talked for a half hour or so, what a hoot...he was a cool guy. Great that he's being recognized this way.

Cheers, Dave

Took me a bit to find it, but here's my video of Lynn Nystrom at the engineer's seat on UP 844 in Oakland, CA, 16 years ago:

Start around 2:04 in the video, where I zoom in on Lynn. He's trying "dry out" the condensation from NorCal's cool mornings. You can ignore the rest.

Earlier in the trip, I socialized with Lynn at Sparks Yard in Nevada and we had a conversation about the high oxygen content of Sierra water. Met his wife, Mary in the souvenir car.

Thanks for the tribute.

Thanks for the tribute to my late, long time friend and co-worker on the UP Steam crew. I first met Lynn at the 10th Anniversary Railfair event at the California State Railroad Museum in 1991. We became good friends, both he and his wife, and conversed a LOT over the many years. I still miss him a lot.

Great photo Jim,

Lynn was a great friend, his photo remains on the board as you walk into the shop. We lost him too soon, he was such an ardent supporter of UP Steam and would have been all-in with the news of bringing a Big Boy back to operating condition. Mary and I often reminisce about their mutual love for the UP, she says hello.

Here's a pic I took back in 2000 when 3985 was in LA for the Democratic National Convention with Lynn, his Wife, Bob Kreiger and Steve Lee

Got to work with Lynn and Reed Jackson, along with Steve Lee and the rest of the crew very briefly in 2009 a few months before Reed passed.  Was a great time.
