N&W 611 at Va Museum of Transportation 6/24/25
Author: JPB

The moderator of Virtual Railfan's Virginia Museum of Transportations PTZ live cam swung the camera away from the NS mainline this morning of 6/24/25 to take a quick look at N&W 611 that is currently undergoing firebox repairs. Hopefully 611 maintenance will wrap up soon so she can get back to hauling excursions.

Also got a quick look at N&W #6 and A class #1218

I'm awaiting the passage of NS IM train 272 as according to Heritageunits.com, its power should be the Conrail and Lackawanna heritage units.

The N&W 611 is currently undergoing general maintenance and her annual inspection, which is all part of keeping this legendary locomotive in top condition.
If you'd like to get a closer look, the Virginia Museum of Transportation is now offering exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of the 611! Each tour includes a short PowerPoint presentation and a guided walk-around of the locomotive while our dedicated crew works to preserve and maintain her.
Tours begin this Friday and will be held every:
  • Friday & Saturday at 12:00 PM
  • Sunday at 2:00 PM
Cost: $15 per person (in addition to museum admission)
Tickets available at the front desk
On another note, the museum leadership, staff, and 611 crew are always actively exploring operational opportunities for the locomotive. We’re optimistic and firmly believe there are great things ahead for both the 611 and the museum.
For the latest updates, please follow the museum’s website and official 611 social media channels - we appreciate your continued support!

Thanks for a look at these engines.   That little number 6 certainly has a comfy cab.  Bet the crews loved it.

Sounds like 611 stays in the museum this year

I wonder if the cab room is less that what you think as perhaps the backhead protrudes into the cab? I stand to be corrected.

As mentioned at the VMT Annual Meeting in Roanoke June 18, work on 611 is going on and operation, possibly this year, is being actively explored.  So maybe 611 gets out and runs this year.

Heard they might run on the Buckingham Branch again this coming fall.
