Didn't the N&W 611 "fit in the shop"?

I was thinking it might be fun to start a $20 pool as to her first fire up date. I'll be gald to kick in with my WAG if somebody is willing to keep the book. Please advise, thanks, Ross Rowland

Please tell me they are NOT mandated to put ditch lights on this iconic locomotive. Thank you

That would depend on the host railroad's own policy. According to FRA, steam locomotives are exempt from having to have ditch lights.

Sorry, you are not very observant or you would see the ditch lights have been on this engine since it ran back in the late 1990's up in New Jersey.  To me, they don't look bad at all and trust me, we need every safety feature we can get with all the crazy people we have in this world.

They are bolted on. Easy to apply or remove as needed or not needed.

The shortline I'm working for never had ditchlights until this year. It's been a small road with low speeds. The guys questioned why we were doing it until the started to see the effect on the cars at crossings. Even at 10mph, they help a lot.

I'm sure hardly anyone on this forum likes ditch lights on a steam engine , but you can always photo shop them out of your photos.   I was having prints done of a Hiawatha F-7 4-6-4 pulling a break in freight train.  The photo shop guy got a little overzelous cleaning up specks of dust, and removed the two bolt heads on the front coupler cover plate.  Oh well, they are still on the negative. LOL.

Ross had covers for them for use during photo run-bys.

The group restoring 614 posted on their Facebook page that the 614 will continue to have ditch lights. But they are building sliding doors to conceal them when they are not in use.

Well, any idiot driver that can't see or hear that huge big black thing coming down the track, making all that noise and producing smoke, will NOT be effected/fazed by stupid ditch lights!
