Steam & Excursion > Steam Files - Denver & Salt LakeDate: 07/25/25 05:32 Steam Files - Denver & Salt Lake Author: train1275 Denver & Salt Lake 200
Class 76 2-6-6-0 This locomotive was built by Alco-Schenectady (#45604) in October 1908 for the D&SL predecessor Denver, Northwestern & Pacific as an 0-6-6-0. The lead truck was added in 1912. In 1947 it was transferred into the D&RGW roster as Class L-77 #3360 and lasted until 1952. These were real low speed tonnage brutes, “bulldog power” whose drivers stuck to the rails seldom slipping. The Denver, Northwestern & Pacific was David Moffat’s Road incorporated in 1902 to build an “airline” from Denver to Salt Lake City. It had numerous financial problems and reorganizations becoming the Denver & Salt Lake Railroad in 1913. After another reorganization in 1926, it became the Denver & Salt Lake Railway and was acquired by the D&RGW in 1931. The D&RGW set about constructing the Dotsero Cut-off that would finally complete Moffat’s dream of linking Denver to Salt Lake via Rollins Pass, which was ultimately conquered by the Moffat Tunnel in February 1928. D&RGW completely absorbed the D&SL in 1947, renumbering and reclassifying the locomotive fleet. D&SL Numbers: 200 - 216 D&RGW Numbers 3360 - 3375* *(202 assigned 3362, but not used as the locomotive was scrapped in 1947) 210 was wrecked and never had an assigned D&RGW number. Boilers of 3368 (208) and 3375 (216) were reportedly used by the Oriental Refinery in Alamosa, CO as steam power plants until about 1964 when a fire occured. 3375 was reportedly used on the LaVeta Pass line for a short time. D&SL Class 76 specs: Low Pressure Cylinders; 33-1/2" x 32" High Pressure Cylinders; 21" x 32" 55 inch drivers 225 psi boiler pressure 70,466 lbs.
