Mike in Coal Country
Author: MaryMcPherson

On August 7, 1944, an unidentified photographer captured this image of Illinois Central Mikado #1717 working in the southern Illinois coal fields at Benton.  This Baldwin product was built in 1912 as #1599, and was renumbered as seen here just a few months before.

She would be sold for scrap in February of 1953.

Coal field grit personified. For all of the times I've been through Benton (relatives lived not far away), I can almost "feel" this scene. Classic IC - thanks!
