Switching North Yard
Author: MaryMcPherson

Here is a pair of photos that I came up with recently showing Illinois Central 0-8-0 #3505 switching North Yard at Carbondale, Illinois.  There is a lot that can be seen in these views, from the water tank and car shops in the distance in the first view, to the machine shop a store locomotives opposite the turntable from the roundhouse in the second.

Time has not been kind to the railroad here as aside from the main tracks, nothing remains of what existed in the steam era.

Photos scanned from uncredited negatives in my collection.

The IC North Yard is just north of all this.

The above photos and map both show a roundhouse.  There is no roundhouse appearing further north along the same line, either on this map or the next (Herrin Quad).

I think the roundhouse was usually referred to as being in North Yard.
