A Lima Central in East St. Louis
Author: MaryMcPherson

The 125 locomotives of the 2900 class 2-10-2 Central types came from the Lima Locomotive Works between 1921 and 1923. #3001 was part of the last batch, arriving in late 1922.  In this photo, the brute of a locomotive was caught in the yards next to the roundhouse at East St. Louis, Illinois, on June 8th, 1935.

These locomotives were powerful, but slow. To speed things up, these locomotives were either upgraded or totally rebuilt in the late thirties and forties. 56 were rebuilt into the 2500 class 4-8-2 Mountains, but this locomotive wouldn't be one of them. She was rebuilt with a new boiler and upgraded running gear and would become #2816 in September of 1945, retaining her 2-10-2 configuration. She would be retired in December of 1959.

Scanned from an uncredited negative in my collection.

Very handsome engine, but given its size and power, the small tender surprises me.  I see that often among RR's.  Maybe a turntable size issue...?
