Two Seemingly Unrelated From Jim Adams
Author: MaryMcPherson

Two seemingly unrelated images from the negatives of Jim Adams, that are not quite unrelated.  Both are shot at Centralia, Illinois, though fifteen years apart.

The first shot was taken on August 23rd, 1958, as Illinois Central's home-built 4-8-2 #2613 digs in to take a train out of the yard at Centralia, Illinois.  This is "the C&C," local #93 headed from Centralia to Carbondale.

Almost exactly fifteen years later, Southern Railway's green Mikado #4501 bangs across the Illinois Central diamonds as she arrives at Centralia.  The locomotive will spend the night here before taking to the Illinois Central (Gulf) mainline the next day en route to Chicago where she will haul an excursion on the Rock Island along with other appearances.

So here we have the last steam locomotive the Illinois Central ran leaving Centralia and the last steam locomotive to run out of Centralia on the Illinois Central (Gulf).

Sort of related, right?

These will be the last photos to post from Jim Adams for a bit.  As I've gotten into his work, I've found the collection organized in a fashion akin to a game of 52-Card-Pickup played with a dozen jigsaw puzzles featuring no discernable pictures.  The last week-and-a-half has been trying to sort the negatives (which have been cut into individual images) into their individual film rolls and as much in the order they were shot as possible.  It's a slow and tedious process, though I've made a good deal of progress.

Once I have things sorted into an organized collection, I'll get back to the business of scanning.  Still to come are images of the end of Burlington steam, the Burlington's steam program, the Rio Grande narrow gauge, Mexican steam, and other gems.

Hey!  Take you time sorting the mess of negatives.  The resuling images will be worth the wait :-)

While they had 4501's smokebox painted biright silver, it was a bear taking color shot on a bright sunny day. Now it is graphite and much easier.
Steam looks more at home in B&W anyway.
