Steam & Excursion > New Mexico Heritage Rail to restore 2 Dormitory CarsDate: 08/24/25 13:07 New Mexico Heritage Rail to restore 2 Dormitory Cars Author: SCREAMINGCRYING From their FB:
On May 18th, 2025 a BNSF Railway Freight train roared into the city of Albuquerque, hualing two new project's for the NMHR. Pine Peak & Pine Lodge, two dormitory cars that were used the the ATSF on trains like the Super Chief! These two cars have made a long journey from Anaheim California, to make it here to New Mexico in a partnership inbetween SBRHS (who owns Santa Fe 3751) to have the cars restored by the NMHR. Once restoration is completed, Pine Peak will be owned by the NMHR as payment for the work, and become a crew dormitory car and support car while the Pine Lodge will be retained by the SBRHS for future operations with 3751. Keep Them Rolling! Just to be clear, these were built as10/6 sleepers then converted into dorm cars by Amtrak by removing the Bedrooms and installing retention toilets and showers for the crew. The toilets in the Roomettes were blanked over and in some cases even the daytime Roomette seat was removed. These cars were not built as dormitory cars. The lounge in the removed bedroom area had a large “smoke eater” vent/filtration system for smokers but the use of this area was short lived and for the most part not used. RG
