Steam & Excursion > Speeders to the Delaware Water gap on August 16thDate: 08/26/25 15:00 Speeders to the Delaware Water gap on August 16th Author: Pattenburg On August 16th, fourteen track cars departed form Scranton’s Transit Center on a 118-mile round trip. One could not have asked for any better weather than what they had. The speeders would stop at Tobyhanna, East Stroudsburg for lunch before heading over to Slateford Junction for the return trip. Only one stop was scheduled on the return trip and that was at Gouldsboro. This day ran fairly close to schedule and there were no major mechanical issues with any of the cars. In short, a picture-perfect day. Here are some photographs from that excursion.
Photo 1: Gravel Place Tower was a photo location I wanted to find and accomplished that goal. That concrete structure is off to the right almost obscured by vegetation. Built in 1911, Gravel Place Tower at MP 83.05 was a location where the DL&W had a roundhouse, turntable and coaling facility. It was also where helpers were provided for the climb up to the Pocono Summit. Photo 2: A better view of Gravel Place Tower. Photo 3: One of the fourteen speeders passes by the Delaware Water Gap station. This station stands today at MP 77.17 and was built in 1903, is on the National Register of Historic Places and was considered to be the gateway to the Poconos. Photo 4: An early postcard view of the Delaware Water gap Station most likely from the early 1900s. Photo 5: I tried my hand at recreating that postcard’s scene, sort of a what was and what is. Photo 6: Heading home past the Cresco station. Like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes this vandalism that occurred in 1989 served as the impetus for the station’s restoration. In the 1990s, work would start with the emphasis on historical correctness. When work was completed, the keys were then turned over to the Barrett Township Historical Society. Their museum features Civil War memorabilia, railroad history and unique artifacts relevant to the Cresco area. Thanks for riding along!    |
