C48s were pretty much the end of standard gauge steam and in less than 10 years from the shot date.

Last two standard gauge steam were L-132 # 3612 and another 2-8-8-2 iin helper service east bound thru the moffat tunnel and cut off till traffic cleared.after clearing the tnnel.    Then coupled to gether they drifted down to Denver to the engine terminal where their fires were dropped for ever.

Interesting, I was always under the impression that the remaining C-48 in Alamosa was last under steam.

The last standard gauge steam run on the D&RGW was on December 26, 1956.  C-48 class #1151 ran a turn from Alamosa to South Fork (on the Creede Branch) and return.

My goof.  I meant to say helper svc to the Moffat tunnel.  It was the last run of the L-131  L-132 series.  Got distracted,   which gets easier to happen.
