Steam & Excursion > STE #3, #29, #15, NWP #06, SP Commute Subs At THA last weekend.

TIMBER HERITAGE ASSOCIATION is scraping there 2100 series SP Commute Subs as the salt air, winter rains and lack of cover has alllowed Mother Nature to re-claim them.  However, they were nice enough to make a call to PLA at Niles Canyon and said we could have essentialy all the guts.  I.E.  trucks, couplers seat frames, lugguage rack, bench seats and light fixtures.  A group led by Doug Debbs, myself, Dee Murphy and Daughter Brook, Peter Savoy and Jim baber drove up to Somoa last Friday and with the fine help of a half dozen member sof THA went thru the subs and gathered our bounty.  I also took images of their collection.   STE#3:  #15: and #29 from Hammond Lumber Co.:

One slight correction, the 29 is The Pacific Lumber Company, not Hammond. 15 is from Hammond.

Golden Gate had the cars for a long time, when they had to vacate Hunter’s Point they sold them to the Nevada Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway, who arranged to store them at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum, where they spent the better part of the 2000s. They were already in pretty rough shape upon arrival in Portola, and the Commission was unhappy that they were stored outside the museum fence and received additional vandalism and damage because of that. The Commission apparently thought they’d agreed to more protected storage. Eventually the Commission decided to part with the cars and sold them to THA at a fraction of their original investment. THA had thoughts of using them on their planned excursion around Humboldt Bay but the cars were realistically too far gone to be serious candidates before they got them. Glad PLA is getting the useable parts!

Only the Suburban coaches are being scrapped. The lounge, diner, and observation car will be safe and potentially used on future excursions around Humboldt Bay.
