The 5632 was the loudest steam locomotive I've ever been around and on, when working hard. Nothing like the Burlington S class Hudsons and O-5 class Northerns. My father took the entire family, mother and four kids, being the return trip would be a double-header.
5632 powered the westbound trip, Chicago to Mendota to Denrock. At Denrock, the engine was wyed and coupled to the open gondola on the rear of the train. 5632 pulled the train south from Denrock through Barstow and into Galesburg. No need to turn the train in Galesburg as the line from Barstow enters Galesburg east of the depot. The open gondola was already on the west end of the train. 5632 headed off to the engine servicing facility and returned with 2-8-2 4960 leading. I know my late father's slides show a couple of photo runbys with 5632 on the westbound trip and I know there was one after leaving Galesburg on the return trip with the double-headed locomotives. I cannot remember if there was a second runby on the return trip. Maybe not. Fantrips on the Burlington were always a great way to enjoy a Sunday! Patrick Date: 10/16/25 09:06 Re: 5632 Author: sierrawestern I remember in the late 1960s visiting, with my father and his railroad friend, who worked for the Chicago and Western Indiana railroad as a leverman in an interlocking tower, on a Sunday morning the Western Indiana's 47th Street roundhouse on the near south side of Chicago.
Dick Jensen had his base of operations in the roundhouse and at that time he had purchased from the Burlington 4-8-4 #5632 after Louis Menk had put a stop to its overhaul in the Burlington's West Burlington shops. While ex-GTW 4-6-2 #5629 was not at the roundhouse (it was probably up in Michigan?) I remember seeing 5632 in a stall across the way. 5632 was so long most of the tender was beyond the doors of the roundhouse stall. I remember too seeing 5629's original Grand Trunk Western 4-axle tender sitting in a stall as at this point 5629 had acquired the Soo Line 6-axle tender it kept for the remainder of its existence. For some reason, my father who always had a camera with him on outings such as these must not have taken one that day as there is not one shred of photographic documentation of that visit. Only the memories and images that exist in my mind, and the older I get those are beginning to fade too. Patrick |
