765 Barks Away From Hillsdale
Author: MaryMcPherson

After good weather on Friday and Saturday, the rain hit for Sunday's fall colors excursion with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765.

After some heavy rain in the early hours, the spigot mostly turned off for the northbound run from Pleasant Lake, Indiana, to Hillsdale, Michigan.  During the layover, the rain moved in.  It wasn't a driving rain by any stretch of the imagination, but it made for an iteresting departure from Hillsdale.  During the layover, a small tree came down across the tracks just south of the last crossing in town and the train came to a stop while crew members went ahead to remove it.

This video begins as the 765 begins to dig in after the crew removed the tree and reboarded.  The rain was coming down and while the camera was mounted on the lee side, you will notice several cross-fades where a big splotch of water landed on the lens and I wiped it clean.

Enjoy!

All this heavy metal sound is great first thing in the morning.
This reminds me of Rolla Hill. Shame you couldn't have recorded from the crew car.

Ironically the crew var would have been closer to the HEP generator, so it may have been louder than this location that was two cars behind it.

The HEP car IS obnoxiously loud. I don't know if there is a practical fix for that or not.

Sure.  No HEP.  Problem solved.  Doubt it would help ridership, though.
