Southern 4501 to Summerville in Black & White
Author: MaryMcPherson

The negatives got back, and I rescanned the roll that the processor did in addition to the other rolls.  This series of seven posts will follow a roud trip down the former Central of Georgia from Chattanooga to Summerville, Georgia, on October 11th, 2025.

1.  The locomotive arrives at Grand Junction from East Chattanooga to tie onto the train.

2.  Departure from Grand Junction; the run is underway!

3.  A father and sun take it in as the train departs.

4-5.  Working up Missionary Ridge Grade at Rossville, Georgia.

6.  We got ahead of the train at a spot we hadn't anticipated and took advantage of one more location on the grade south of Rossville.

10.  This is a rescan of the train in a wooded area near Walnut Grove, Georgia.

11.  Entering Summerville, Georgia.

12.  Another rescan as the train enters Summerville, Georgia.  Shot 11 was with a 50mm lens, and I quickly swapped cameras to shoot this image at the same location with a 28mm lens.

14.  Now on the return trip, the train is northbound about a mile north of the last scene north of Trion, Georgia.

15.  South of Lafayette, Georgia.

19.  The train eases through Rossville, Georgia, after descending Missionary Ridge Grade.

20.  Easing through Rossville, Georgia, the train passes our wheels and Kurt doing his thing with the video camera.

21.  The final scene is another rescan as the 4501 blasts across Chamberlain Avenue at East Chattanooga as she climbs the short but steep hill onto the museum's own right-of-way.

This was our first visit to Chattanooga since 2018, and we had a ball... even if 4501 came up lame and missed Sunday's trip.

We were ready to go the next morning, trackside in plenty of time to catch 4501 backing light from East Chattanooga.  As the clock tocked closer and closer to the Summerville Steam Special's departure time, we began to suspect that something was amiss.  Sure enough, the train was going to be running with diesel power.

TAG, you're it!

Hope nothing seriously wrong with 4501. I know well the feeling of "coming up lame".
Your scans are 1000% better than the developing companies as I know they would be.
Great job and love the B&W.

We were back up and running the next weekend. It was something run-of-the-mill for an engine that's been running for 10 years.

I'll take the blame for it.  In the course of a month, three in a row came up lame: 401, 630 and 4501; all as our cameras either were there or about to be.

It made me concerned for 765's safety!
