Steam & Excursion > NKP Freelancing in Michigan back in October, 2011.

On October 1, 2011, NKP was in town pinch-hitting for PM 1225 which was getting it's 15 year inspection / repairs.

1.  I zipped down to Ithaca early in the morning to find 765 already paitiently waiting for the passengers to show up for the 9 AM departure.  It's in sun-shade here, but sun has not risen high enough to really blow the shot out.

2.  A little after 9 AM 765 comes blasting by and there is enough light to make the shot work.

3.  At Clare, the train comes pulling out of a bit of a woods right into Clare proper.

4.  We see 765 steaming past the outskirts of Marion.  The chill in the air really works for the exhaust visibility, and he's running a nice clean stack :-)

5.  765 rounds a slow bend in McBain as it continues on to the Cadillac destination.

6.  765 has turned (very slowly and carefully) on recently oiled  wye.  The wyeing took a good 20 or 30 minutes...  No one want to rerail a loco on that wye ;-)

7.  And now we see the engine leaving the wye.  Somewhere on the trip the loco broke a spring hanger and stayed in Cadillac over night.  It chuffed back to Owosso the next day.

8.  Here is poor NKP 765 limping back to Owosso with a broken spring hanger.  Two weeks after laying over in Owosso, the spring hanger was repaired and she was off again, pulling another train of folks from Owosso to Alma and return.  I'll get those shots up when I'm done with the edits.

That return move to Owosso was a long day. 8 plus hours to return. And also a water stop at Clare to have a few additional gallons of water in the tender. So thankful for the powers to be at GLC to allow us to return unassisted to SRI facility. 

I'm glad you went unassisted.  That engine looked great going by the local university :-)  Heh!  I didn't need to wait by the tracks for you to show up.  I head your whistle miles out of town.  It was nice to have that loco up here during our dry spell of no steam.
