Steam & Excursion > Steam in Western Canada

A few days ago, the Alberni Pacific Railway on Vancouver Island completed the annual steam tests on Baldwin No. 7. Since the locomotive was already fired up, we coupled a set of log cars behind her and took the train for a run around the Port Alberni yards. Roland Smith captured several great photos from the day.

After nearly six years out of service, the Alberni Pacific is steadily working to reactivate a portion of the former Canadian Pacific Railway line on Vancouver Island. We now have two miles of track back in service, with more to come. As we continue to expand the operational trackage, we’re planning to offer a couple of photo charters in addition to our growing schedule of tourist excursions and special-event trains.

According to the Southern Railway of British Columbia website they still operate their Southern Railway of Vancouver Island subsidiary.

Are there plans to return to the mill site?

Yes. That is the goal for now.

Operating Schedules are usally listed on the Alberni Pacific Railway website.
Getting ready for Christmas runs right now followed by the 2026 summer schedule. Its yet to be confirmed but probably running Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting in late spring.
