Prep work to move NYC 3001 continues

PRESS RELEASE: https://www.americanloco.org/2025/11/nyc-3001-begins-journey-toward-2026-move/

ELKHART, IND. — The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has completed the first two weeks of hands-on mechanical work on New York Central steam locomotive No. 3001, marking a significant early milestone in preparing the historic engine for relocation and eventual restoration.

Despite spending more than seventy years outdoors, the initial findings have been encouraging. Inspection of all axle roller bearings revealed no signs of water intrusion, rust, or mechanical concerns. Old oil has been removed, the bearing boxes flushed clean, and new lubrication has been applied.

The main and side rods were removed during the process, and crews polished each crank pin and bearing brass. The locomotive was easily moved a short distance for the first time in more than two decades.

Work has also begun on the locomotive’s air brake system, which is being rebuilt and upgraded to modern 26L standards. Additional repairs are underway to ensure compliance before transport. Kano Laboratories, Kroil Penetrating Oil, and Horizon Rail have aided recent work.

As the year concludes, supporters and the public are invited to contribute to the continued progress on this nationally significant preservation effort.

Donations will directly support the next phase of work required to move and safeguard No. 3001. All contributions up to $10,000 toward No. 3001’s restoration will be matched through December 31.

It would be a fantastic accomplishment to restore a NYC Mohawk to operating condition. Great to see things are looking positive for advancing towards the move.

But where to run it?  Total waste of time and money to restore it to operating condition if you don't have a place to run it.

The same place(s) we are already running excursions with Nickel Plate Road no. 765.

The video at this link will be very informative: https://www.americanloco.org/2025/06/500000-goal-met/

Majority of the primary railroad is former NYC territory, including the Old Road which featured Mohawks and Hudson’s, pulling restored NYC passenger cars, operating between restored NYC stations, and only a few miles from the original Water Level Route, essentially a 1:1 resurrection of the New York Central.

The 21st century career of #765 has been living proof that if you position yourself to take advantage of opportunities, they tend to find you.
