Southern Predecessor
Author: MacBeau

Records at southern.railfan.net show Georgia Southern & Florida 162 as one of nine 4-6-0's built by Baldwin between 1905 and 1907 for the GS&F. That same roster also shows it was scrapped at Macon, July 1934.

I can't recall seeing antyjing from this railroad before. She is a good-looking 4-6-0.

Was my first encounter too with this line, and agree it is a nice looking ten-wheeler. As late as 2017, NS 5051 had GFS reporting marks.

Love it, and would like to see it in color.  I suspect it's interesting.

Though Southern Railway System controlled GS&F since 1895, it did not integrate the company into the Southern numbering system until the early 1920s.

We cannot imagine NS without this strategic line, but until the late 1940s, Southern was considering letting it go because of financial drain. That itself was an interesting story and involved the trustees of the Seaboard Air Line looking at acquiring the GS&F.

A number of Southern and later NS locomotives wore GS&F sublettering.  It was always a favorite of mine to railfan, as old US hwy 41 closely parallels much of the line between Macon and Valdosta.  And it was dispatched with track warrants given over the radio, so you always had a good heads up for train movements.
