70th Anniversary CommemorationThe 1956 Wreck of Norfolk & Western No. 611

Seventy years ago, a single night forever changed the story of one of America’s most legendary steam locomotives. On January 23, 1956, Norfolk & Western No. 611 was involved in a tragic wreck that left a lasting mark on the locomotive, the railroad, and the people who served her. This pivotal moment (often remembered but rarely explored in depth) stands as one of the most sobering chapters in her history.

On January 24, 2026, the Virginia Museum of Transportation invites you to join us for a powerful evening of remembrance, history, and reflection inside the museum’s Auto Gallery. This special program will feature an in-depth presentation and discussion examining the events leading up to the wreck, the aftermath, and its long-term impact. Attendees will also hear a special 2025 project announcement, revealed publicly for the first time during this event. For this night only, a special display related to the 1956 wreck will be on display offering rare insight into the famed story of No. 611.

Light refreshments will be provided.

In 2015, FWRHS brought in a car host crew to help with the 611's return to special service at Manassas, VA. While there, several different people told me that every single J class locomotive rolled over at one time or another. Is that accurate?

We’ve heard that story as well, but as of now we’re still investigating how accurate that claim actually is. What we can confirm is that we have solid documentation and photographic evidence of a few specific incidents:
  • Norfolk & Western 611 — the well-documented 1956 wreck, with extensive photos and reports.
  • Norfolk & Western 604 — a derailment in West Virginia, also involving the locomotive on its side and occurring in a curve.
  • Norfolk & Western 607 — an incident near Portsmouth, Ohio. In that case, the locomotive did end up on its side, but it appears to have been related to track condition and/or speed rather than a curve, unlike 611 and 604.
Beyond those three, we haven’t yet found primary-source documentation (photos, ICC reports, railroad records, etc.) that confirms every J-class experienced a rollover. It’s very possible the story grew through repetition over the years, but until we can back it up with hard evidence, we’re treating it as unverified lore rather than established fact.Research is ongoing, and if additional documentation turns up, we’ll be happy to update our understanding accordingly.

I recall RAILFAN magazine years ago quoting someone from the N&W that every one of
the J's had been in the Tug river.

I don't know if true or railfan schnaps talk but the story sounded pretty cool at the time.
