Steam & Excursion > 2716 Marches Away From Pocahontas, TennesseeDate: 02/06/26 10:12 2716 Marches Away From Pocahontas, Tennessee Author: MaryMcPherson Call this a continuation from the 614 Willow Valley thread, as this presents another George Redmond audio sequence. Interestingly, this was recorded exactly a year to the day after the trip with C&O 614 in Indiana.
On May 2nd, 1982, George had set up the recording gear behind Southern Railway's leased C&O 2-8-4 #2716 on a Memphis to Sheffield, Alabama, round trip. Again, he was using a stereo recording system with one microphone on either side of the train. In this sequence, the train accelerates back up to speed after slowing through Pocahontas, Tennessee. The background photo and the accompanying photo were both taken in Memphis the morning of the 2nd as the 2716 was being readied for the day's run. Enjoy! I remember my first excurision behind the 765 in 1982 from Louisville to Lexington. I had walked into the sound car and was told not to talk. Microphones seemed to be everywhere recording the sounds of the 765. Mr. Redmond may have been one of those gentlemen. A few years later sometime in the nineties I met Mr. Redmond in Centralia. I was out trying to catch a few IC trains when I found him sitting there in his car parked just north of the crossing. Very nice gentleman as we we conversed about trains. Joe Vittitoe

He's in his 80s now (!?!?!?) and lost his wife last year, but is still getting around quite well. He was planning to join us filming 4501 last year, but his dogsitter pulled out at the last moment.
Also, I did a quick look and George was recording on that Louisville to Lexington round-trip on September 25th, 1982. I have the master tapes digitized, but haven't yet edited them. I lived there for 16 years - even grew up not far from the NS main! - but sadly was born way too late to experience the "Sentimental Journeys" as they were called. (From what I can gather, they were sponsored by a group called Sentimental Journey, Inc., and proceeds went to the LeBonheur Children's Hospital.)
