Built & Rebuilt
Author: MacBeau

Juniata built K2 3373 in 1911, which according to the Pennsylvania Modeler was the same year it was rebuilt into a K2s. John S. Powell photographed it in Philadelphia, 1913.

Amid all of the change in the railroads since this image was captured more than 100 years ago, some things remain the same:  the two guys in the cab getting their faces in the shot!  Some essential things remain constant :-)

What is the square thing on top of the headlight?

As you put on these treasures, we can be thankful such images still exist. These help make the past come alive.

That nothing agrees is more than a little disconcerting. The historic record says this locomotive was both built and rebuilt in the same year, yet the photo, dated two years after the fact, clearly shows it still as a K2, not a K2s.

The guy said superheated engines have outside
steam pipes, smokebox to valves. Probably he was
just referring to K2s's? Was he for sure right?

(In later years, lots of superheated engines had
inside steam pipes.)

As more K4s and other classes surface, it is a safe bet he was correct.
