Steam & Excursion > UP 4014 Public Excursion on R&N

UP 4014 is scheduled to pull a public excursion on the Reading & Northern from Nesquehoning to Pittston on June 14 according the link below.

Should be VERY interesting, especially if there are no diesel "helper" units involved.

In all fairness it doesn’t explicitly say that 4014 will be the power. There have however been several clues that 4014 may make a move over the R&N. I’ve also found it unusual that R&N seems to have not released a full summer excursion schedule as usual. Instead they are announcing things piecemeal….almost as if they have been waiting for some other schedule to be finalized first.

I noticed this too, but I thought it had more to do with concerns over security from rail fans chasing the train. From what I saw on the winter ramble it was borderline getting out of hand. 

Way back when the NYS&W ran steam excursions, fans were known to be excited.

The Sandyston, Hardyston, West Milford, and state police cleaned up with speeding, illegal parking, reckless driving, etc tickets.

Railfans speed, drive reckless and illegally park? Who knew. I mean like 3 wide on the road up the hill
to Cima, how can you be over the line if there isn't one?

I doubt that. If they are going to announce excursions with enough advance notice to sell tickets, it’s also enough time for the chasers to make their plans.

By the way, trains magazine is now reporting that 4014 WILL be powering this excursion. Tickets will first be sold to Union Pacific museum members and any remaining tickets will be made available to the public.

Will this be an R&N consist with open window coaches? They have the ability to field a first class 20+ car train and they have their own insurance with their passenger operations? 2102 will certainly be hot and greeting 4014 that day regardless. What a great piece of railroad for a 4014 excursion!

I’ve ridden through the gorge behind 2102 twice and 765 once. It’s a terrific experience.
