Steam & Excursion > UP steam-era help needed for photo ID: Train #24 in 1956?Date: 04/03/26 20:03 UP steam-era help needed for photo ID: Train #24 in 1956? Author: s3northern I'm hoping someone more knowledgable than me can help with a UP image. Before I save any metadata to a scan of the attached negative, I want to verify (as much as possible) that the date on the sleeve is accurate. This Ross Grenard shot of UP 829 at Cheyenne was in a sleeve with "9/1956" for the date. I don't have a September 1956 UP timetable. Can anyone confirm for me whether there was a train #24 that operated through Cheyenne during the 9/56 timeframe? I can't find a train #24 listed in a timetable I found from earlier in 1956, which now has me second-guessing the date on the sleeve.
Thanks in advance, Mike Jacques San Diego, CA Date: 04/03/26 20:41 Re: UP steam-era help needed for photo ID: Train #24 in 1956? Author: timz The Gold Coast ended 1/55, didn't it? Don't think
there was a 24 after that. Wx4.org or Don Strack must have a 1956 timetable. https://wx4.org/to/foam/maps/1-Ogle/1955-01-09UP_Wyoming22_OCR-Ogle.pdf https://utahrails.net/UP-PTT/UP-PTT_1956-02_Feb-1-1956_Don-Strack.pdf Edited 2 time(s). Author: hawkinsun Hi Mike, At some point in it's life, I think this locomotive was painted in the grey scheme from 1946 to some time in the mid fifties ??? It has pretty clean black paint for 1956 so could be right. I have a model from my dad, painted with that number but in the grey / grey paint.

Good to see you on here. Yes, 829 was in two-tone-gray for a chunk of her career. I've got some other nice negatives of her, and at least one is in the greyhound colors. Watch your email and I'll send you a scan of her in the gray to go with the model you got from your dad. I've got one of the builders plates from 829. We need to connect at one of the RR shows one of these days. Mike |
