Steam & Excursion > Steam Locomotive (McCloud River) No. 19 Completes RestorationDate: 04/24/26 17:02 Steam Locomotive (McCloud River) No. 19 Completes Restoration Author: TTStetz3 Steam Locomotive No. 19 has been officially christened at the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Sugarcreek Ohio.
The multi-day celebration marked the return of 2-8-2 No. 19 to operational status after a full restoration, according to a community announcement. The event included train rides behind No. 19, guided tours of the roundhouse, and a screening of the 1973 film "Emperor of the North," which prominently featured the locomotive. Built in 1915 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, the 2-8-2 steam locomotive originally known as No. 4 for an Arkansas logging railroad went on to serve in Mexico and California under multiple owners and numbers, including appearances in major films such as "The Emperor of the North" and "Stand By Me." After decades of service, legal disputes, and storage, the historic engine was sold in 2016, relocated in 2017, and then underwent a full restoration. No. 19 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) in April 1915 as Caddo and Choctaw Railroad (C&CRR) No. 4, it was Baldwin's 42,000th locomotive produced. The locomotive was also christened with the name of R.L Rowan; an engineer on the railroad. In the early 1920s. The engine was placed into service in August 1923 and worked in regular service on the McCloud River Railroad until it was purchased by the Yreka Western Railroad (YW) three decades later on June 8, 1953, when the railroad began acquiring diesel locomotives. No. 19 was leased in 1970 for summertime excursion service in Oregon on the Oregon, Pacific and Eastern Railway (OPE) of Cottage Grove, Oregon It was while the engine was in Oregon that No. 19 was used in the filming for the 1976 United Artists film, Bound for Glory, loosely based on Woody Guthrie's life. It was eventually sold to Dennis Daugherty of the Age of Steam Roundhouse for a bid of $400,000. It arrived to the Age of Steam Roundhouse on June 2, 2017. The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum houses the largest privately owned collection of steam locomotives in the United States. The museum features an 18-stall roundhouse, a historic turntable and preserved rail equipment. T. Trent Stetz Portland, Oregon Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/24/26 17:12 by TTStetz3. One small correction, the 19 did not appear in Bound for Glory, that was shot almost entirely on the Sierra, Western Pacific, and Tidewater Southern railroads in central California, McCloud River 2-6-2 #25 appeared in parts of the movie shot on the Tidewater. The two movies featuring the 19 were Emperor of the North and Stand By Me, both on the OP&E.
