Southbound CVL 4070
Author: refarkas

(Redo) Southbound Cuyahoga Valley Line 4070 (Ex-Grand Trunk Western 4070) is approaching Akron, Ohio on October 27, 1979. With its string of heavyweight passenger cars, it appears to be a train from the 1940's or 1950's.

Nice period shot.  Certainly could be 1947.

what became of the heavyweight cars?

I don't think I've ever seen a pilot like 4070 has before. The "teeth" go all the way across. Usually there's a small step on each corner.

Where is 4070 and what is her status?

Six of them (formy Pennsy P70's) went to Austin Steam Train Association to operate behind SP 786. They were subsequently sold in the past few years to a group currently in charge of a Chinese 2-10-2. I hope someone can fill in the groups' name in a later post.

4070 is in Cleveland at the Midwest Railway Preservation Society B&O Roundhouse. MRPS has recently completed a main frame repair. The next project is replacing the smoke box. Some of the heavy weight cars that were used on the Cuyahoga Valley Line are still in Cleveland with MRPS. NKP 90 has had extensive body repairs and new window shades and it is leased out and in service in Cincinnati right now. NKP 62 is complete and operable, but the car needs extensive roof repairs due to rust and that project may take a long time. The Mount Baxter/aka John Foster is currently receiving extensive body repair to all of the window posts and it will be completely repainted. The Hot Springs Pullman/aka Fort Eustis is still in Cleveland in very rough condition and not in service. The head end cars in the photo are NYC RPO car 5170 and N&W combine car 1504. I don't know where 5170 ended up when it left Cleveland. N&W 1504 was a Jim Crow car with a partition and it ended up at Queen Annes Railroad in Delaware.  It was scrapped sometime around 2010 or 2011.Two other coaches in the photo may be  NYC day coach 2318, and an Erie car. Erie 1022 went to Ashtabula,Carson and Jefferson and I think it is still there and probably for sale. The 1022 coach has 5X5 draw bars, friction bearings and probably has floor rust problems. I do not know where the NYC 2318 ended up.

Thanks to trainsfireengine for such a detailed history of the cars and what happened to them.
