Old Steam Locomotive Question
Author: train1275

I found this inventory of locomotives dated January 1, 1855 in a booklet entitled "Charter, Laws and Lease of the Cayuga & Susquehanna Railroad 1828 - 1886"

The booklet was compiled and printed by the DL&W which leased the C&S which was in essence their Ithaca Branch extending from Owego 34 miles north to Ithaca on Cayuga Lake.

So the question is .... what are jacks screws that are associated with each locomotive ?

Very interesting. A jack screw is just that. A jack that raises and lowers via a screw mechanism. In the early days of railroading it is conceivable that this road assigned a set of jacks to each locomotive to handle over the road repairs. This is an inventory, not necessarilly equipment purchased with the locomtoive but the way it is presented, I'd say there was a 1:1 relationship between jacks and locomotives.

One wonders, given the lack of a reference to them, that the "house" cars listed were in fact, box cars.

House cars also included reefers and stock cars if I recall, but I don't know what this particular railroad rostered. I agree that they're likely boxcars.
