Steam & Excursion > CB&Q 4070Date: 04/28/26 21:59 CB&Q 4070 Author: refarkas CB&Q 4070 is actually Cuyahoga Valley Lines 4070 (Ex-GTW 4070) lettered for a scene in the movie The Natural. For a few weeks after she returned to the CVL, she kept her CB&Q lettering. This image was taken in late summer/early fall 1983 in near/in Akron, Ohio on her southbound journey. The CVL is now the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

Bob Date: 04/29/26 06:58 Re: CB&Q 4070 Author: randgust The Natural was filmed in South Dayton, NY, on the New York & Lake Erie Railroad - which is the Dayton intersection of the original Erie main line from Hornell to Dunkirk, and the ex-Buffalo & Southwestern line from Buffalo to Jamestown.
Where the B&SW came into the Erie main line east of Jamestown was a wide spot in the road called Waterboro Junction. They brought 4070 across on Conrail (Erie Lackawanna) and took it up to South Dayton on the B&SW line out of Waterboro. Just after the movie finished and that trainset headed back, I bought a house overlooking Waterboro Jct. Conrail era, main was still a 4-train a day deal, but after living there over nine years, I never, ever, ever saw another move on that track, and while the rail is still in, you'd need a metal detector to find it between Waterboro and Conewango Valley/Cherry Creek. The 4070 move back out was the very last move ever on that track that had been the Buffalo main line of the Erie headed west. For movie fans, the South Dayton station is still very much there, along with the 'background' of South Dayton, and they very much celebrate the movie to this day as it was also the setting for "Planes Trains and Automobiles" a few years later.
