UP 4014 Schedule Question in Ohio
Author: train1275

I was looking at the schedule for the 4014 here in Lake Erie Land and scratching my head.

So if they leave Bellevue at 9am, then stop at Lorain 35 miles east at 1:15pm, that is something like an average of 8.2 mph.
Is this schedule padding?

Running from Lorain to Euclid for the next posted stop is 37 miles in about an hour which sounds about right.

Anyone have any thoughts on that ?

I'm in Vermilion, right in between Bellevue and Lorain, and I wouldn't mind if they hung around here for extended photo ops, but somehow I don't think that is their plan ...

Thanks for posting this question, I was wondering the same thing.  Maybe they aren't quite sure of the exact departure time due to yard issues or traffic?
We thought it also strange to have a 15 min stop in Lorain...quick service stop or make sure the bridge is down? lol

Lastly...it would be great to be in Lakewood to hear that whistle for all those crossings.

BTW...where are you thinking of setting up?  Shinrock, Beaver Park?

You'll hear plenty of whistle anywhere you go and none of that distracting exhaust barking, to compete with it..
Ed Dickens was attached to the whistle cord at birth.

I'm driving up the the former Erie Lackawanna from Georgia, just to say I saw it once, Not expecting much and I'm sure
that my low expectations will be fully met.

I think Ed will be taking it slower that the posted 40 mph allowed by NS timetables for Steam locomotives. This is what I have been hearing from current RR people.

I live right on an NS mainline and look forward to seeing this happening. I've caught many special trains here but never a steam loco in the last 25 years. But my expectations are low considering the mob scenes I've seen posted anywhere the 4014 goes, except maybe out in the open deserts of the west! I'm not even sure I'll attempt to video, but maybe just a couple of grabshots for posterity. I just want to experience this. At my age I'll probably not have many more opportunities of this nature.
My younger son works in town and his boss is closing shop so all the employees get a look see. My other son works for UP in a Philly suburb and not sure what his plans may be or if NS/UP are providing any special access for employees.

As a West Coast boy (but native of Ohio, BTW) I wish everyone on the BB's eastern swing a wonderful  experience. If you've never seen it, it is a near-spiritual encounter.

A quick note about the schedules from what we experienced in Utah this year.  We chased 4 times and the initial departures were on time either when we were there in person or watching the GPS map. The Ogden departure was kinda funny.  They started on time, but they switched out the diesels and made two trains, so it didn't really "leave" Ogden for a long time.  Which was a good thing, I think I ended up with a better photo location.  The interim stops were pretty close to the schedule, except the stop in Morgan after leaving Ogden late.  The difference for us I think is that they've run this route to and from Utah a few times now and probably have the schedule down cold.  I would expect some "delays" for the portions where it's a first time visit.  And I do think they've baked in time for servicing, waiting on other trains, etc.

I will add that the GPS map wasn't as useful this trip.  It wasn't updating very frequently, in some cases maybe once an hour, so I got caught by surprise when the Big Boy was coming through Weber Canyon on it's way to Ogden.  So I'd use the GPS tracker as a "guesstimate" as to where it is where in the past it was accurate within 5-10 minutes.  And as someone else mentioned, be ready for crowds.  The first day we chased, the crowds were pretty light because of the weather - spring snow.  But on the return trip headed out of Ogden, it was a gorgeous sunny morning and there were big crowds everywhere!  Pretty close to the size of Spike150 crowds for it's initial run.
