But at least it does have a roof now so the rate of deterioration has been slowed.
 

Southern Pacific 2718, 2-8-0, looks impressive with it's new roof and night lighting.

If you have to leave a steam locomotive outside, High-Desert-like Alturas is a pretty good place to do it. Nice enclosure!

I'd love to see a "standard" SP 2-8-0 restored to operation.

I was just a kid, but I remember in Los Angeles in the early 50's, Harriman Standard Consolidations, Moguls, and Ten-Wheelers were all over the place, switching or pulling freight on branch lines.  They all looked pretty similar, with piston valves matched with inside valve gear.

One almost made it but still might.SP 2706(9)? was bought by a UP engineer and was being restored when his boiler man died. Not sure the status of the locomotive now.
