I see photos like this and I remember the late Wes Camp on this website saying "You want those firebricks white hot--that's when you're steaming!"  I imagine that's exactly what was happening here, up ahead in the engine.

Since the T-1 is a coal burner, did it even have any "firebricks"? Now an oil burner has lots, and LOTS of firebricks, and they get very, VERY red when the locomotive is working hard.

A very different sort of T-1 used to roll beneath these signal bridges...
