Kettle Moraine 9 is in North Lake, Wisconsin on August 20, 1976. She is ex-McCloud River Railroad 9 and is now at the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio.

Thanks for posting the photo!  For comparrison, here's a shot of the #9 early in its McCloud career.  It also worked for Yreka Western, Amador Central, and Nezperce & Idaho during its working career before going to tourist service.

Age of Steam has done some interesting things product wise with the #9, including a Christmas ornament and collaborating with R. Duck Locomotive Works on a wood model of the locomotive.

Interesting to see the phone box in the McCloud photo. Suggests they are on a branch waiting to get onto the main, or being held at a point of some sort.

Likely the Saginaw Timber/Polson Brothers/Rayonier #2, Baldwin 2-8-2. A group of Michigan based railfans bought the 2 from Rayonier around 1962 and shipped it to Michigan under the mistaken belief (based on the Saginaw name of its first owner) that it had actually operated in Michigan. The 2 operated on Kettle Moraine around the 1972-1974 ish time frame before sidelined by mechanical issues, shortly after date of this photo it moved to Illinois Railway Museum for a restoration that never happened. Ended up on Mid-Continental, then its owner brought it back west to Oregon Coast Scenic until he passed, Albany & Eastern now owns it.

Albany & Eastern RR. now owns Rayonier #2.  She is on loan to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, Oregon

McCloud 9 along with 2-6-2s 8 and 10, always looked a lot like Sierra Nevada Wood and Lumber / Feather River Lumber 8 to me.  I know the FRL 8 was built as one of Baldwin's "Sequoia" logging models.  Were McCloud 8-10 also "Sequoia" types?

We've had relatively inconclusive conversations around the "Sequoia" designation in the past.  Having looked at a healthy number of Baldwin records, the only "official" use of the "Sequoia" designation I have seen is the name applied to a single locomotive, Baldwin c/n 25503, built by Baldwin in April 1905 for display at the Lewis & Clark Exposition in Portland and then sold to the Dolbeer & Carson Lumber Company of Eureka, California.  The "Sequoia" was the 76th example Baldwin built of their 10-26-1/4-D class; Baldwin built the first locomotive of this class in 1895 for the Rumsford Falls & Rainey Lake, and the McCloud River #4, #8, #9, and #10 were the 10th-13th examples of this class.  Interestingly enough, Baldwin built the 14th through 75th examples of this class for export to Asia.  Baldwin did build a fairly large number of this class for western loggers in the years after the Sequoia's display, including the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber #8 that was the 90th example of the class built, so it is not out of the question that "Sequoia types" may have been in some general use after 1905.  Production of this class eventually extended to either 194 or 195 locomotives through 1926.  Should be noted these figures do not include a large number of Prairies built in the adjacent classes that differed in cylinder size.  It is interesting to note Baldwin's Record of Recent Locomotive Production publications #76 and #93 all show key words starting with "Red" as code words for locomotives in the class (Redamaret, Redamatos, Redrawing, etc.).  Also interesting to note that McCloud River in their corporate records from around 1905/1906 referred to their Prairies as "Mongul" types.

There might be something missing from this timeline.  I remember riding behind the 9 on the Kettle Moraine sometime in the mid-to late 1980's.

5150, timeline is for the Saginaw/Polson 2. Kettle Moraine continued on with the 9 and a two truck Heisler for many years after the 2 left the property.
