Yes, they are using home road pilots.

A friend of mine that works for NS got to pilot the Big Boy after leaving Steamtown to Dupont Junction (near Pittston, PA).   Only a few miles but he got to be in the cab of a running Big Boy!   As far as I know, he didn't touch a thing, just made the crew aware of the location of signals, crossings, and the switches.
