Speeder excursions on the Delaware Lackawanna RR
Author: Pattenburg

On August 22 & 23, a track car excursion traveled Delaware Lackawanna RR’s track covering two different routes. Saturday’s run twenty speeders departed from the DL Yard in Scranton (PA) and traveled to Slateford Junction in the Delaware Water on a 118-mile roundtrip. Sunday’s run would find twelve speeders traveling over the DL’s Carbondale Line on a thirty-eight-mile round trip. What follows are some photos from both trips.

PHOTO 1: Departing the DL Yard on Saturday morning close to schedule are the twenty cars.

PHOTO 2: Three of the cars can be seen passing through the Elmhurst Township where a Route 435 bridge replacement and additional improvements are ongoing along Front Street and within the existing railroad drainage system. This included replacing two aging box culverts beneath the railroad. One of the challenges this project has presented was working adjacent to an active railroad in addition to protecting a sensitive local river tributary, and operating within tight site constraints and difficult terrain.

PHOTO 3: Arriving in East Stroudsburg for lunch, the track cars will spend about an hour here before continuing east to Slateford Junction’s Yard for the cars to be turned for the return trip to Scranton.

The journey continues…

PHOTO 4: Another planned stop was at Gouldsboro. Local residents greeted the speeders with grilled food, a band and a 1926 Ford Model T. That brick against the car’s rear tire was labelled “Parking Brake”. Ahhh… the simplicity of cars back then compared to today’s vehicles. Perhaps that is one reason why this particular car is 100 years old.

PHOTO 5: Crossing over Mifflin Avenue in Scranton, the twelve cars are headed for Carbondale on this overcast Sunday morning.

PHOTO 6: A video shows the sun has finally popped out from behind the clouds as the twelve speeders prepare to cross South Valley Avenue. Traffic was halted for their crossing by an Olyphant police officer.

Thanks for riding along!

Wow I’m glad the sun came out, your video it lit perfectly!

This just might be VOTD material.

Fun Post! Earlier today I saw a vintage photo of a man working under the hood of a car from the Teens or Twenties with a pair of boards holding the car in place. How appropriate to have a brick labeled "parking brake".

That looks like more fun than you can put into words.  Now you've got me thinking it is time to sell some stock and join the fun.
I am already contemplating paint schemes. B&O is in the lead. Wait until my wife hears this !  Thanks for the photos and video.
