ATSF 1010 2-6-2 Prairie built by Baldwin in 1901 as a 4-cyl. Vulcan compound and simplified in the 1920s.  Now in Sacramento.  Photo taken in March 1972

Roger Puta took this at Redondo Jct. in Los Angeles, CA.  Santa Fe 2-6-2 #1010 is the only surviving locomotive that participated in "Death Valley" Scotty's record-breaking run across the Santa Fe system in 1905, and was later used in Ronald Reagan's "Death Valley Days" recreation of the Scott Special.

Its a nice looking locomotive.  I recall seeing it in the Redondo roundhouse when I was a kid. Dad and I went down there and friendly ATSF guys were happy to show us around.

I thought CSRM announnced a plan to restore this to operation.  Anyone have any insight into the progress or status of that project?  How great would it be to see this one under steam again.  its a perfect size for the museum's excursions.

Nice locomotive.  The air looks about right for Los Angeles in 1972, and yet people wonder why the EPA was created.

Looks like someone snagged the builders plate.

When my wife was a docent at the California State Railroad Mus em, 1010 was her favorite locomotive.  I like it too -- note my Trainorders handle.

I've lost track of the various planned restorations at CSRM.  I do remember hearing that 1010 ran on air quite a while ago, but long after retirement from revenue service -- maybe late 80s?

AFAIK awaiting full funding, and several other projects taking priority
