We'd chased the train south that day, and bagged a couple neat shots along the way. My traveling companion, Nils, talked to a homeowner about taking a photo from her backyard. She was going to be out for the day, so she was fine with us sitting back there.
What a lovely spot she had along the Sprague River. We ate our lunch at her picnic table and took a brief nap. In the afternoon a north (east) bound SP freight showed up with SP 7455,6855,8534 and 7441 leading. Note the transients enjoining themselves on the first bulkhead flat car. We were all set for the arrival of the 4449... Only one small problem.

Back in 1994 i was chasing UP 3985 west out of Green River, headed to Ogden. A copter was flying low over the locomotive going up Echo Canyon. On the scanner, we heard the engine crew say "Let's fog him." Next thing you know, they sanded the flues, and the copter disappeared in the resulitng huge cloud of smoke...and then reappeared at a higher altitude. Those of us lined up just off the interstate to take photos got a good chuckle out of that one. In fact, I may have pics of that event. I was engineer going up Dixon Hill on the way to Springfield. On a steep part of the hill on a fill. All of a sudden a chopper came up from down below where I didn't see him. It was a Springfield TV helicopter. All of a sudden he was right in my face. Scared hell out of me for an instant. 1522 was so loud I didn't hear the chopper.
