Nostalgia & History > old steam photos needing answers

Included in the recently donated Ken Shattock collection are many old photographs without any written information. A majority of these were pasted onto a photo album. There may be some written information on the back of each photo, but I am unwilling to try to separate the photo from the black paper pages for fear of damaging the photos. Besides, the photos are fine where they are. That said, there are several photos I'm hoping someone can provide answers.

This first photo appears to show an accident damaged 4-6-0 minus the lead truck. To me it appears to be a Northwestern Pacific ten-wheeler sitting at Tiburon, CA. On the back of the photo there is writting as I can see the impression pushing outward on the surface. Holding the photo with the light at the right angle and reading it looking with a mirror it says something like, "Wrecked on the Southern Div. Engineer and brakeman killed - went through burnt bridge."

I looked through several NWP sources but couldn't find any helpful information. Anyone got a clue? - Ken Shattock collection, Tony J.

This photo shows 0-4-0T #1182 and is lettered "Shattuck Edinger." The cab is boarded up and the only caption is "OA&E Tunnel construction locomotive." SO we do know it worked on the Oakland, Antioch & Eastern. Anyone out there have more information on this locomotive? - Ken Shattock collection, Tony J.

This photo is heavily faded, but it shows what appears to be two tiny 0-4-0Ts outside the enginehouse. A close examination reveals no lettering and the engine numbers (if any) cannot be seen on the smokebox. The surrounding terrain suggest perhaps a quarry railroad.

This photo shows a narrow gauge 4-4-0 with a passenger train. The photo caption says, "Narrow gauge near San Diego." The locomotive is #15, but I can't quite read the builder's plate on the smokebox door.

This is surely a "shot in the dark" photo identity search. The photo is slightly blurred; the wheels are missing from the locomotive, and there is no numbers or lettering visible. Still, you never know. Someone may have the answer. - Ken Shattock collection, Tony J.

The caption under this photo reads, "Old Jumbo at Casper, Mend. Co. - Geared loco built S.F. 1868." I was thinking this today is the gypsy locmotive at Roots of Motive Power. - Ken Shattock collection, Tony J.

I don't know anything about this photo other than this is the kind of equipment normally used by Tony's Tours. The passenger cars would also be of this quality.

This will be the last photo for a while. It's a Heisler locomotive and the photo caption reads, "Old Log Engine & Milton. Heisler." Ia ssume "Milton" is the little boy standing next to the pilot (he appears in other photos). The footboards are removed and placed upside down on the wooden end beam. The name on the tender is difficult to read. It appears to be "MIRENE Co." I cannot find a number. - Ken Shattock collection, Tony J.

I believe it is the NWP 184 and I also believe that the accident was some time in the late 30's early 40's.

This could be OR&L 15 but that would place the picture on Oahu not San Diego.

The wreck of NWP 184 happened January 17, 1953 at Scotia Bluffs. Three killed, Engineer, Fireman, head Brakeman.

The NG PASSENGER train is OAHU RAILWAY & LAND Co. with the
#45 doing the oners....looks to be around WW 2 with all
the blue jackets geting on. The #45 was Ex. SONOMA VALLEY
RAILROAD NO 1 "SONOMA" BUILT in 1881 by Baldwin.

I would agree that the shot of the 15 looks like Oahu to me. Right wheel arrangement, and that looks like sugar cane in the background to me.

Now that you mention Oahu, that does look like sugar cane to the right of the station scene.

Per the NG 4-4-0, that spot plate (with the star) is a dead bellringer (pardon the pun) for Baldwin. Apparently relatively few Baldwin "star plates" remain in existence are highly prized.

After takeing a long hard look at the old photo ......I now think
its the # 15, O.RY. & L. Co......going by the domes,etc. built in
1889 by Baldwin for the OAHU RALWAY.

I know the 184 was considered a "hard luck" locomotive. It's hard to say if this photo is the 184 after being fished out of the Eel River. It doesn't look like it was in the water.

The photo captioned mentioned a "burnt trestle", whereas the derailment in the Eel River was caused by a slide. Looking in Stind't book it says the 184 was scrapped on the spot after being recovered from the river. In a video I have it briefly shows the 184 submerged in the river, but it's the fireman's side that shows.

Oh well, we'll keep searching for clues. - Tony J.
