Is this pic the Uintah Rwy?
Author: timz

Never seen this scene, and I haven't a clue where the Uintah ran.

At http://www.corbis.com put IH155842 into the search box and click on the thumbnail.

I very much doubt that that photo is of a Uintah Railway train, as the caption says
it was taken "near Bingham, Utah", and Bingham is in the Salt Lake City urban area.
and is a long way from where the Uintah ran: between Mack and Rangely, Colorado,
approximately 63 miles. Mack is on US 50, just east of the Utah-Colorado border.
I also do not think that curved trestle is on the Uintah Ry, as it is so unusual and
impressive that surely someone, especially Otto Perry, who took a number of photos
of the Uintah Ry, would have photographed it with a train on it.

One more thing: the Uintah carried the gilsonite in 100-lb bags on flatcars, not in
gons - and the cars in that photo look like gons to me. I also think the Uintah's
trains were shorter than the one in that photo.

Henry Bender, a local San Francisco Bay Area man, wrote the definitive book on
the Uintah Railway: "Uintah Railway-The Gilsonite Route". The book is fascinating,
even for someone like me - I am not at all that interested in narrow-gauge railroads,
or small locomotives, but Henry writes so well about this fascinating little railroad
that he makes it very interesting. It has been reprinted and is available. Henry
also happens to be an expert on Southern Paciric depots.

While you're at Corbis, take a look at IH155841 and IH155843 too.

These phots were taken around the Bingham Mine of what I think was then Utah Copper, which
became Kennecott.

Thanks! :) I did - neat photos! How did you happen to find that site?

I really like looking at old photos - of other things as well as trains. It is
absolutely wonderful that some libraries somehow had the money to digitize
their entire photo collections - amazing. The Denver Public Library is a real
treasure.

Steam Powered Video Atlas of Colorado and Utah on page 42 shows:

(1) Dry Fork Bridge (with tunnel 1)
(2) Markham Bridge

Shows it as the Bingham & Garfield Railroad, a subsidary of Utah Copper.

"IF" that is it the photo with the trestle and tunnel in the background would be a northbound train from the mine and shadows would indicate early afternoon.

Markham Bridge is closer (south) to the mine.

Would the passenger train be hauling mine workers?
