Nostalgia & History > Huron South Dakota '76Date: 01/21/06 17:34 Huron South Dakota '76 Author: odub Huron was one of CNW's Alco centers. It was also pretty much a boneyard by the summer of 1976.

The line from Winona, MN to Huron was mostly Alco powered until 1981, when the 244 powered units were retired and the remaining 251 powered units were transferred to Green Bay, WI. The C425 in the first photo had a major component failure (either engine or main generator) and was eventually repaired. The 401 was one of the mother units for slug BU41 (in the 3rd photo), and that would explain why BU41 was sitting around. RS3s 1624 and 1613 were damaged in a wreck and rebuilt by Alco in 1960 with RS11 machinery. The 1624 did not return to service, and pretty much sat as shown in the photo until retired. The 405, C&NWs only RS36, was also a result of an RS3 wreck rebuild by Alco in 1962. It was eventually repaired and put back into service too. Great photos, thanks for sharing!
