Time for some WP cabeese.

Here's a shot of the 427 from 9-75.-BMT

The second and third shots are before and after repainting of the 480. The first from September '75 and the second from January '78.

Cool pictures, but I must ask... why, in the first picture, does the signal and rear coupler look blue-green?

I seem to remember someone mentioning that the Western Pacific painted all the signal devices a light green of some sort. I searched for the thread, but couldn't find it.

It's not the coupler but the pot signal for the siding in the foreground, that's green. WP painted all their signals green.-BMT

In the 1970's, WP used a jade green paint on many of its signals and wayside buildings. It was a...unique look and very different from any other railroad.

The story I heard is that WP somehow ended up with a car full of this paint and decided to use it. Not sure if that's true or not.

I'm willing to bet that was an Al Perlman directive. We joked that the jade green should be called Perlman Green.

"Al Pearlman green" is correct; it also means $. WP stock was down to $8 a share when he arrived and his legacy is the mighty WP-UP-SP merger.
