CalTrain before the Dots
Author: samreeves

Here's a look at the old CalTrain blue and green swoosh. This was a sharp looking paint job in the day compared to the red dots. Locomotive 902 makes a stop with an eastbound commute at Santa Clara in January of 1990. It is sporting Rio Grande style numberboards after a visit to the Roseville shops.

Those "Rio Grande" style number boards are actually early EMD number board numbers. They used those as their basic factory applied number style during the 50's and 60's. Some roads kept them on the locomotives permanently. Surprised to see one show up on a Caltrain engine though.

It is EMD style, very interesting! SP used this typeface/font for many of it's numberboard replacements in the eary 90's.

Maybe I'm having a browser issue, but I don;t see a picture. I see pics in the follow up posts, but not the original...
