Nostalgia & History > A GE U33C and Amtrak Coast StarlightDate: 05/12/06 22:10 A GE U33C and Amtrak Coast Starlight Author: choochoocharlie This is an oddball lead unit for the Amtrak Coast Starlight #12 as it leaves Santa Barbara headed for LA. SP 8662 leads Amtrak SDP40Fs #554 and 556 of 18 cars. Extremely unusual to see a GE on this train until the later "Poochs" and "Pepsi" cans, etc. Looks like it's almost time for the weed sprayer too.............. C.C.Chas.

Maybe that's why you didn't see U-Boats on the Starlight too often. :-)
Date: 05/13/06 08:52 Re: A GE U33C and Amtrak Coast Starlight Author: spnudge Those last pics were all in SLO. The last one looks like they are trying cut out the overspeed on the freight unit and I think thats Art Laidlaw in the plaid shirt standing on the ground with the rest of the RH crew. With the EMDs, you would pull off the lower left hand wire on the OS relay and that took care of the problem. Thats a big no-no today. I can't make out who the engineer is.
Nudge Date: 05/13/06 09:45 Re: A GE U33C and Amtrak Coast Starlight Author: clem That was 11 July 1972 and of course atsffan and Nudge are correct. The overspeed was kicking in at about 4 mph. The roundhouse foreman eventually stuck a second U33C on the point. No 11 took about two hours to get from the depot to the Orcutt Road crossing.
