"Historic SP Whistle Lives On" ...
Author: KeyRouteKen

Hi Everybody-- Thought I would share a historic piece of trivia with all of you...
The attached photo shows the steam whistle that was removed from Southern Pacific 4-6-2 Class P-4 "Pacific"-type steam locomotive # 2422 when it was scrapped many years ago. This whistle was polished as you see it here, by SP forces, and presented to the late Victor Shattock in December--1959, by the SP as a retirement gift...

A few years later, for whatever reason, Vic gave the whistle to the late "Ralph Lyman" who was a retired 50-year SP engineer.. A couple of years later, Ralph moved to Oakhurst, CA and got a job as an engineer with Rudy Stauffer at the Yosemite Mountain--Sugar Pine Railway at Fishcamp, CA.
Somehow, Ralph got permission to place the whistle on Rudy's heavy duty 3-truck Shay loco # 10...
Today, this same unpainted whistle continues to adorn the boiler of # 10 and gives the impression to visitors that an "SP Pacific" is coming thru the woods.

The locomotive in the photo with the whistle is the THIRD loco with the 2422 number that Vic built over the years; this particular locomotive was built in 3/4" scale, with a track gauge of 3 1/2" ...

Cheers.

"Key Route Ken"...
